Numbers 20:1-25:18

The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 38 years as part of God’s judgement on them for rebelling against Him and His Word. As if the author deliberately blotted them out, the narrative inconspicuously moved from the first generation to the second in a few chapters. Adding to the subtlety of the transition is the fact that the second generation grew up very much like their fathers, murmuring against God at every opportunity! Despite their weaknesses, God’s grace and mercy prevailed as He continued to watch over His people and protect them against external and internal threats.

Application Questions

  1. Read Numbers 20. What did the Israelites complain about this time? What incurred God’s judgement on Moses and Aaron? What do you learn from this chapter about God’s attitude toward disobedience?

  2. Numbers 23 revealed the sovereign hand of God upon the Israelites. King Balak told Balaam to curse the nation of Israel, but God stopped him. How would you handle a situation where you are pressured into going against God’s will, as Balaam was by Balak? How does this chapter inspire you to trust more deeply in God’s sovereignty?

  3. Read Numbers 25. Why was the Lord’s anger so greatly kindled? How did God deal with Israel’s sin? What did God’s response to Phinehas reveal about God’s justice?

  4. From these passages, we can see that life is often a mixed bag of failures and victories. In either circumstance, how do you draw strength from God’s grace and faithfulness? How do you stand up and move on after a failure?

Closing Reflection

God persevered with us despite our weaknesses and stubbornness because of His faithfulness. Along the way, there may be seasons of discipline and restoration, and there may also be seasons of perseverance and victory. But through it all, His unwavering kindness will motivate His people to continue journeying through life with Him.
