INTRODUCTION

In this series, we examine six of the most googled questions about Christianity. This week, we unpack the question, “Is Jesus God?”  

Some say Jesus Christ was just a man or maybe a great teacher. But He was and is much more than that. The Bible says Jesus is unique in both His person and His purpose. He was not just some spiritual individual during His time on earth. The Bible claims that He was both God’s Son (John 3:16) and God Himself—God in human flesh (1 Timothy 3:16). Yes, He was fully man, but He was also fully God (Colossians 2:9). 

If we acknowledge that Jesus is God, it changes everything for us. Who do you say He is? If you say He is God, would you give Him your full devotion?

DISCUSSION

1. Who do you think is the most influential person in history or in this generation? Why do you think so?

    

2. Read Matthew 16:13-17.

    

   a. Make a list of the people mentioned when Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” What do they have in common? ​​

   b. If this question were asked of society today, what do you think would be the kind of answers you would get?

3. The real test of what one thinks of Jesus Christ must revolve around who He claimed to be and what He accomplished during His time on earth. Our conclusion must be that there is no Christianity without Christ; it all centres on Him. What do the following scriptures tell us about the Person and work of Jesus Christ? Which, if any, of these verses are difficult for you to accept as truth?

   a. He is fully God and fully man.
   – His divinity (John 1:2-3, John 6:69, John 10:30, John 17:5, Colossians 1:7)
   – His virgin birth (John 1:14, Luke 1:30-31, Isaiah 7:14)

   b. He forgives sin, as only God can.
   – Mark 2:6-7, Matthew 9:6

   c. He performed miracles.
   – He healed the sick (Matthew 8:9-13, Luke 4:31-44, 5:12-15)
   – He fed the hungry (John 6, Mark 8)
   – He raised the dead (Luke 7:11-18, John 11:1-46)

   d. He died by crucifixion, was buried and rose again from the dead.
   – Matthew 20:28, Romans 3:24, 1 John 2:2, 1 John 4:10, John 20:24-31, 1 Corinthians 15:4

   e. He is the only, all-sufficient Saviour of the world.
   – Acts 4:12, Romans 10:9-10

   f. He will return.
   – Acts 1:11, Hebrews 10:37, John 14:3

   Why is it important to realise that Jesus is God? 

4. What do you believe about Jesus? If you are new to Christianity, what further questions do you have about Christianity? If you have been a Christian for a while, who is Jesus to you? If you believe that He is God, then it should change everything in your life. How does your life reflect what you believe?

WHAT WILL YOU DO

The predominant theme of the scriptures is the Person and the work of Jesus Christ. He is God. He became a human being, forgave sins, performed miracles, died by crucifixion, and was buried. He rose again from the dead. He is the only, all-sufficient Saviour of the world. He will come again to this earth.  

Why should we care who Jesus is? Acts 4:12 says, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” He is our only hope.

If you believe with all your heart that Jesus is God, would you give Him your full devotion?
