The Sound of Us (Part 1)

Speaker: Rhordan Wicks

INTRODUCTION

Every great movie has an iconic soundtrack that instantly brings the movie to mind the moment it is heard. This week’s sermon invites us to consider a similar question: What if the way God’s people live together creates a recognisable “soundtrack”, so distinct that the world immediately knows, “That must be the church”?

When we put our faith in Christ, we are marked with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is given as a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance. The Spirit is not only God’s presence with us now, but a foretaste of the future kingdom that is still to come.

That future kingdom is made both visible and audible through spiritual gifts. Paul reminds us that we must not be uninformed about them, because every believer is given at least one spiritual gift. When each person brings their God-given function and serves together as one body, the church becomes a living preview of heaven on earth.

DISCUSSION

  1. Read Ephesians 1:13-14. Paul says that when we place our faith in Jesus, we are marked with a seal, and the Holy Spirit is given as a deposit of what is still to come.

    a. What does it mean to you personally to be “marked with a seal” by the Holy Spirit?

    i) How could a deeper awareness of the Spirit’s presence change the way you respond to everyday challenges?

    b. How does understanding the Holy Spirit as a deposit, a guarantee of God’s future, encourage you to step into service or ministry as a way of discovering your spiritual gifts?

  2. Spiritual gifts are not earned, achieved, or reserved for a select few; they are freely given by God’s grace. Each gift points beyond itself to the nature of God’s kingdom: healing reflects wholeness, prophecy reveals God’s nearness, hospitality embodies God’s welcome, and administration expresses God’s ordered peace. (Full list of gifts below.)

    a. How does seeing your spiritual gift as a reflection of God’s kingdom, rather than a personal achievement, reshape your sense of purpose?

    i) In what ways could your gift point others toward God’s kingdom today?

    b. What practical steps can you take to begin discovering your spiritual gift?

    i) Which gifts from the list resonate with you, and how could you begin using them to bless others this week?

  3. Read 1 Corinthians 12:12. A collection of instruments can make noise, but only alignment produces music. Likewise, the church is not meant to be a gathering of gifted individuals, but a functioning body, many parts, one Spirit, one purpose.

    a. What does it look like for you to bring your God-given function into the life of the church?

    i) How can the church cultivate an environment where each person’s gift is recognised, valued, and coordinated for the good of all?

    b. If the church truly functioned as one body, what “sound” do you think the surrounding world would hear?

    i) What barriers – fear, comparison, busyness – might keep the church from producing this harmony, and how can you help overcome them?
  1.

WHAT WILL YOU DO

The church is not the conclusion of God’s story; it is the preview. Through the Holy Spirit, God has placed the future inside the present. Spiritual gifts are the soundtrack of that reality, making the unseen kingdom tangible here and now.

When believers discover, develop, and deploy their gifts together, the church becomes a living demonstration of heaven on earth, not perfect, not complete, but real. A community where love fuels power, humility shapes service, and unity turns many instruments into one song.

The question is not whether God has given gifts. The question is whether we will bring our sound, play our part, and join the song. Because when we do, the world does not merely hear noise. They hear the sound of us, and it sounds like the kingdom of God.

MEMORY VERSE

Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed…

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good…

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines…

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
