The Sound of Us (Part 3)

Speaker: Rhordan Wicks

INTRODUCTION

Like a piece of orchestral music, every instrument has its place in the concerto. Each musical instrument is unique and plays a different cadence; yet when played together, the result is moving and impactful. How do we as God’s people create this symphony together so that the world can hear God through our instruments?

DISCUSSION

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 12:7. The Corinthians lived in a competitive society, just like us in Singapore and were using their spiritual gifts as a symbol of their social status.

    a.
What do you think “manifestation of the Spirit” means?

    b. Why do you think Paul emphasises “each one”?

    c. What does Paul say is the purpose of spiritual gifts?

  2. There is a tendency to confuse our roles with our gifts. Examples of roles might include musicians, sound technicians, worship leaders, ushers, LifeGroup leaders, or pastors. In contrast, spiritual gifts include Administration, Mercy, Pastoral Leadership, Prophetic, Apostolic, Healing, Giving, Service, and Helps.

    a. Do you know what your spiritual gift is? Share with the group.

    b. Share a time when you used your spiritual gift that had an impact on the people/community around you.

    c. Do you have any fears or doubts that might sometimes prevent you from using your spiritual gift?

    d. Would it be strange if a musician had the gift of healing or if a pastor had the gift of administration? Not at all. Does your spiritual gift area prevent you from serving?

  3. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul talks about love being the highest and most essential quality of the Christian life, without which our spiritual gifts are empty and baseless.

    a. Choose a few people in your life and ask them this question: When and how do you experience Jesus through me?

    b. When we see someone else serving in a way we do not agree with, do we compare, withdraw, complain, or get curious?

    c. To exercise love, we need to learn to serve one another by complementing each other’s giftings with our gifts. How would that look in your current role?

    d. How can we stay connected and humble when differences in personality, gifting, or pace create tension?
